Pregnancy, Birth and Baby is a phone and online service for all Australians. Speak with a trained counsellor for information, advice and counselling about all aspects of pregnancy, childbirth and your baby’s first year.

After hours GP Helpline

The after hours GP helpline is an additional service to healthdirect Australia, and lets you speak with a registered or accredited GP for further medical assessment and advice. It is designed to supplement existing after-hours medical facilities, giving all Australians access to the advice of a doctor at nights, on weekends and on public holidays – 365 days a year.


Breastfeeding Helpline

The Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) runs the National Breastfeeding Helpline 1800 mum 2 mum (1800 686 268). The Breastfeeding Helpline is available 7 days a week and offers support and advice to breastfeeding mums.

Miracle Babies Foundation NurtureLine is a free family support helpline catering for families with a threatened pregnancy, the hospital journey with a baby currently in NICU/SCN, the transition to home and onwards.


PANDA - Post and Antenatal Depression Association

PANDA operate a helpline that is available Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm AEST and is staffed by trained counsellors and volunteers who provide confidential information, support and referral to anyone affected by depression and anxiety during pregnancy and after childbirth.

Pregnancy, Birth and Baby helpline

Whatever feelings or thoughts are on your mind we’re here for you. There is always someone to talk to, with counsellors available between 7am and midnight AEST offering confidential support. Call 1800 882 436 (free from landlines).

The Pregnancy, Birth and Baby helpline offers information, referrals and/or support to pregnant women, partners and families or new parents who have a baby up to 12 months of age. The helpline is available at any time of the day or night, 365 days a year or if preferred, callers can use the video call option between 7am to midnight for face-to-face support.

At this time, the service is only available to people located in Australia.

What to expect from a counselling call?

Counsellors will provide non-judgemental, non-directive and unbiased counselling with a view to support callers with their primary concerns.

Counselling discussions may include areas such as:

  • unexpected outcomes (for example, miscarriage, genetic conditions, unplanned pregnancy, medical information)
  • relationship changes
  • fertility
  • unplanned pregnancy options
  • exploring a range of feelings related to pregnancy, birth or parenting in the babies first year of life
  • discussing the pregnancy with others (for example, partner, children, parents, religious or cultural groups)
  • underage pregnancy
  • adjusting to parenthood (for either parent)
  • high risk behaviours
  • coping with the demands of a new born.

It is important to note that the counselling provided by the Pregnancy, Birth and Baby helpline is intended for pregnancy, birth or parenting concerns and issues, and not specifically for mental health disorders (although counsellors will respond when and as appropriate).

Who are the counsellors?

The counselling team is a multidisciplinary team, with counsellors requiring previous experience working within a telephone counselling context, a minimum of 4 years tertiary education in social work, psychology or counselling and an a current membership with an appropriate peak body. Further to this, counsellors require specific training in pregnancy, birth or parenting related issues.

When are counsellors available?

Counsellors are available between 7am and midnight (EST). Outside of these hours, the phone is manned by staff able to provide information and referrals, and have the capacity to arrange a counsellor to call back at a convenient time to the caller the following day or evening.

What happens when you call the helpline?

When contacting the Pregnancy, Birth and Baby helpline, a caller can initially expect to hear a recorded message:

  • outlining services parameters
  • directing callers to contact emergency services where appropriate
  • stating all calls are recorded for training and coaching purposes
  • advising that facilities are available to turn off call recordings and/or for callers to remain anonymous.

The call will then be placed in a queue for the first available Customer Service Operator (CSO) to answer. Once answered, the CSO will:

  • obtain information to start a confidential record of the call. It should be noted that even when a caller wishes to remain anonymous, it is hoped age, postcode and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage will be provided
  • assess the needs of the caller
  • provide information, referrals, or transfer the caller to a counsellor as appropriate.

Translating and Interpreting Service

A caller may prefer to speak with Pregnancy, Birth and Baby helpline in their preferred language (other than English), and therefore will require the assistance of an interpreter.

This may happen one of two ways; the callers may contact Pregnancy, Birth and Baby helpline having already obtained the services of the translating service, or during the course of the call staff are able arrange for a translator if it is required.

If, as suggested above, during the course of the call it is indicated it would be easier speaking in a language other than English, the caller will be placed on hold while the Customer Service Operator contacts the Translating and Interpreter Service to organise an interpreter.

Once connection is established the call continues as per usual.

This will be at no charge to the caller.
